UEFA EUROPEAN NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP
Henry Delaunay Cup
The 14th Edition
Poland / Ukraine, 8 June - 1 July 2012
UEFA is again organizing the 14th edition of the European Nations Championships, a competition that joins all the national teams in Europe in trying to qualify for the final stages of the tournament, which then crowns one nation as the European Champion that wins the Henry Delaunay Cup. The competition evolved slowly with the first five editions (1960-1976) having only the last four matches hosted in one country. This changed from the sixth edition onwards (from the 1980) for a full tournament of 16 teams.

The first two editions (1960-1964) were called the 'European Cup' but since the third edition (1968) the tournament started to be called the 'European Nations Championships'. For the second time, the European Nations Championship is being co-hosted by two countries - Austria and Switzerland. This is the first time both countries are hosting the European Championship, although Switzerland had hosted the 1954 World Cup. Italy won the competition in 1968 and finished runner-up in 2000 when they lost in the Extra-Time with the Golden Goal. They also finished twice in the fourth position - 1980 and 1988. The European Nations Championship was hosted by Italy in 1968 and 1980.

The predecessor of this European competition was the 'Coppa Internazionale' that was played between the Central European Nations between 1927 and 1960. The competition was played on a home/away basis and reached six editions. Italy won two of them (first edition - 1930 and third edition - 1935) and finished second in another (second edition - 1932).

EURO 2012
Italy, although favorites, lost their bid to host the Euro 2012 to Poland / Ukraine. During the vote by the UEFA Executive Council, Italy received 4 votes to the winners 8. The other finalists, Hungary / Croatia obtained zero votes. Claims of bribing by the winning nations were investigated by UEFA and Italian police but found to be unfounded

The Official Logo of Euro 2012
The mascots of this edition are the twins Slavek (Slawek) and Slavko. Wearing the colours of both hosting countries, Red and White of Poland and Yellow and Light Blue of Ukraine, Slavek and Slavko, share their love for the game of football through their ball at their feet. This ball will unite them as the Euro Championship unites both contries in this feast of football. Like the Euro 2008 mascot, the twins were created by Warner Bros and their names were chosen by popluar vote in which 39,233 Polish and Ukrainian football fans participated. Slavek & Slavko won by 56%, followed by Siemko & Strimko with 29% and Klemek & Ladko with 15%.
